Well, the opening weekend was really crowded. But by monday afternoon the elk had calmed down and we found a herd of around 80-100 cows and spikes out feeding @ 5:00 pm. With the wind in our favor we walked right to the edge of the herd and I had a nice spike at 58 yards. I was just about to shoot when the wind shifted and most of the closer elk split. I then ran around the hill to head them off. 5 cows were walking on a trail to me and when I pulled back the lead cow stopped and I picked out the smallest cow and let the arrow fly. She was @ 18 yards. They all scattered and she only ran about 80 yards. It was around 1 mile to the nearest road, it took around 5 trips to get out all the meat.

I hope everyone else is having fun.

Nice job Brandon! After your success the last couple of years, is it true that any elk is a good elk?

I still have a few weeks to wait here in WI.

Congratulation Brandon-did you use your stick or wheels to get the job done?

Seen a few good bucks, but unfortunately haven't been able to close the distance. Hopefully this next week I can change that.

Way to go Brandon.. I Just finished my 2009 Utah Bear hunt. It started Saturday and I was finished Sunday. We treed a beautiful bear on saturday, but it had cubs. Then treed a great, dark chocolate bear on sunday, and I decided to take it.. It squares out over 6 feet. My son Remington, Chase, Shawna, and Dustan Hinkins of Chasen Outfitters along with Tyson Hinkins, his girlfriend Amy, Jay Butterfield, Katlin Bell, and Caleb Worthen (aka CHI CHI) were all there to help... Thanks to all it was a great hunt. I took it on a steep mountain side with my Mathews bow and Muzzy broadheads. The pictures didn't turn out to good, because it was cloudy, and raining like a bugger.. All cameras had water on the lenses.. Great adventure anyway..

That is an Awesome Bear. It looks like it has a great coat. You guys must have had a really great day to tree two different bears.I was up on Strawberry ridge this last Saturday glassing for elk and heard two different sets of hounds down in the canyon. I'm just waiting for the day when a bear tag comes my way. 5 points and still waiting.

I still have an archery deer tag burning a hole in my pocket.

Nathan, I do believe that any elk is a good elk with a bow.

I tried for two days with my trad bow but got so frustrated because all the opportunities were just out of range with that bow. So of course after I picked up the training wheels the next shot was under 20 yards.

Lets see some more pics guys, I talked to Luis today and he is on the mountain seeing elk every day. Hopefully he get an arrow into one.

Way to go Mark. I cant wait to draw and put Bret and his dogs to work. 6 points now so I have a pretty good chance of drawing. Lori and I went deer hunting for a few days and had no luck. She turned down 3 little ones hoping for a nicer one, but thats the chance you take. Anyway it was just good to be in the woods doing what I like. I see lots of new members signing on to the forum and would love to hear your stories. Oh and by the way My new daughter-in-law archery hunted for the first time (actually first hunt ever) and had a thirty yard shot and got so excited she forgot to nock and arrow and drew back and shot. Bow is OK. But we sure have a great story to embelish over the years.

Was a good opener to the Archery season. This trip we saw alot of animals. After 2 hard days of hunting, spotting, glassing and many miles on the leather, I was able to connect on a beautiful 6x6 with matching 1 1/2" cheaters on either side and some great fronts and awesome mass. Saw this buck out feeding and after a long hour long stalk I shot this buck at 21 yards. He ran down the trail about 35 yards and I watched him stop and stagger like he had been hit by a heavyweight fighter. He took a couple steps to the right out of sight. I knew it wouldn't be long before he went down. After giving him a good half hour, I began a slow check for blood and to look for my arrow as it was a pass through. As I walked 20 yards passed the where I had shot him, I found him lying in some brush. What I didn't know was that I only had a 10-12 inch window through the pine right in front of me and my arrow had just barely clipped the tip of a branch which made the shot a little back. I had shot him through the liver. As I approached and saw him just lying there, he was still breathing so I knocked another arrow to shoot so he would not suffer. As I took one more step he immediately jumped up and took one step and turned and looked at me at 7 yards broadside. The staredown began, I slowly pulled back the string and let another one fly right behind the shoulder. He ran about 40 yards and was down for the count.
Here he is after the I found him:

Here is what my Montec G5 did to him. I love these broadheads. They open an animal right up.

Some other pics of him before the boning out the meat and four mile pack out!
